Saturday, Jan. 9, POUGHKEEPSIE: A free public showing of a documentary on "Afghan Women: A History of Struggle," will begin at 7 p.m. at the Friends Meeting house, 249 Hooker Ave., followed by a discussion. After more than eight years of U.S. war and occupation, the plight of the women of Afghanistan has not changed substantially from the days of Taliban rule. And whatever positive change has take place largely derives from the struggles of the women themselves. This event is sponsored by the Dutchess Peace Coalition and the Poughkeepsie Friends Meeting. Saturday, Jan. 9, SAUGERTIES: A music, dinner and dance fundraiser takes place today at the Elks Lodge on Rt. 32 to benefit Emilio and Alalia Maya of the local Tango Café. We're informed "they are facing possible deportation and incurring large legal bills." Live music is from 4-6 p.m., followed by a buffet dinner at 6 p.m., then after dinner tango, salsa and swing dancing. Suggested donation $20. Information, Gary Bischoff, eccxray@verizon.net.

Monday, Jan. 11, OLD CHATHAM: A showing of the full length documentary "Rethink Afghanistan" will be shown, public and free, starting at 7 p.m. at the Powell House Quaker Conference and Retreat Center, 524 Pitt Hall Rd. off County Rt. 13. This film combines footage from the war with interviews of experts from Afghanistan, the U.S., and Russia centering on the critical issues of military escalation, its effect on Pakistan and the surrounding region, the cost of war, civilian casualties, and the rights of Afghan women.
